LOS ANGELES, California – The Scandic Berlin Potsdamer Platz i Scandic Hamburg Emporio are two properties located in Germany that belong to Scandic, the largest hotel chain in the Nordic region. The modern, stylish hotels feature décor reflecting classic minimalist Scandanavian design. Both are centrally located with easy access to bus and train services. Or guests can choose to pedal on bicycles to local shopping, dining and cultural spots. Segways are also available at Scandic Berlin.

Green Globe congratulates the hotels on their recent recertifications and their Gold member status marking five years of continuous certification. Both properties also achieved outstanding compliance scores of 90%.

Steffen Seichter, Director of Sales and Marketing at Scandic Hotels Berlin said: “We are extremely excited and proud that Scandic Berlin Potsdamer Platz has reached Green Globe Gold Status after five years of being a certified Green Globe Member. If we think back, we are more than happy with our sustainability development in Germany considering that the hotel was not even opened six years ago. And Green Globe has been a partner with us from the very first beginning here in Germany.”

Tobias Albert, Director of Sales and Marketing at Scandic Hamburg Emporio added: “We are thrilled to receive the Green Globe for the fifth year running also. The Green Globe certification inspires us to improve our sustainability program even further and gives the team a well-deserved acknowledgement of the efforts and ideas they contribute throughout the year.”

Održivost is an integral element of Scandic’s values. Both properties adhere to Scandic’s own sustainable building and construction standards (SERECS) that are mandatory for all new hotels. All rooms are constructed of 90% recyclable

natural materials. Only green energy supplied by Greenpeace Energy is used and free electrical charging stations are provided for electrical cars. In addition, all energy and water consumption are regularly measured and published. And in the last three years, energy consumption has been reduced by 5,3 kWh per guest night.

The hotels prefer eco-labeled products including Fair Trade Coffee and tea. Breakfasts with organic options are served daily and the Scandic Berlin Potsdamer Platz has two apiaries on its rooftop producing local honey. The Berlin and Hamburg properties filter their own tap water and serve it in recycled glass bottles to reduce transportation carbon emissions. While in kitchens food waste is transformed into organic fuel and gas by using Prehrana i RuBio waste disposal systems.

Staff at every level contribute to carrying out sustainable best practices in their daily work and beyond. Very early on Scandic recognized the need to provide comfortable accommodation and other options for visitors who have physical disabilities. Each property has facilities and more than 30 rooms that are wheelchair accessible and hearing loops are available at reception counters. Furthermore, in line with its social responsibilities, Scandic Berlin supports the local Scandic Intellectually Disabled Soccer League. The ID League has been active for the last five years and 21 teams with approximately 350 members played during the 2014/15 season.

Meanwhile at Scandic Hamburg, a Green Committee is in place where staff members from different departments meet and exchange new ideas about sustainability. This gives every employee the opportunity to take part in the hotel’s Sustainability Program. Committee members share information ranging from operational strategies regarding resource saving measurements and minimizing carbon emissions through to the planning of future events for the wider community.
