The lesser-known region of the Penang state in Malaysia is going all out to increase footfalls and visits from Indian tourists.
As part of its efforts, a 14-member sales mission was on a 4-city tour of Indian cities, interacting with travel agents and tour operators.
“The response was good,” said Trica Loh, Head of Sales for the Penang Convention and Exhibition Bureau, “and this optimism was shared by other attractions and destinations.”
The mission was in Delhi on January 14, after visits to Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and Chennai.
The MICE offerings of Penang were stressed as well as the potential to boost weddings and adventure segments.
The Escape theme park was a major draw, said Loh, who told this correspondent that the heritage personality of the state was also important, along with a modern image.
Little India and other places offer wide choice to tourists looking for vegetarian and non-vegetarian cuisine.
Just as Malaysia is truly Asia, Penang is truly Malaysia, it was stressed.
Connectivity was good via KL but direct flights would surely help in this area.
Sheila of Penang Tours spoke of the fruits of the region and of her large fleet of transport DMC Subbiah saying her focus was to meet new agents. Shopping was a big draw, she added.
Rahul Kanishta of Shangri La promoted the two properties of the chain in Penang.
Malaysian Airlines reps highlighted the connectivity role of the airline.
